Mono
By Radel Paredes
Cebu Daily News First Posted 08:27:00 03/14/2010 Filed Under: Arts (general), Printing

Printmaking allows artists to reproduce their works in limited editions using various methods ranging from block stamping to serigraphy (silkscreen printing) to the use of an etching press. The idea of sharing your works with more people is enough motivation for the artist who is normally stereotyped as antisocial and self-indulgent.

But the procedures of graphic arts (as fine printmaking is traditionally called) can provide exciting possibilities for creativity. Still, there are techniques that may not allow the artist to repeat the image; or the artist may decide to print only a single impression from a plate. In such cases, the process is called monoprinting.

Of course, many collectors of graphic arts prefer monoprints since they assure them that no one else owns the same work by the artist. The printmaker too enjoys making a work that is part painting and part print. The method retains the elements of surprise as you will never know for certain what effects are created until you pull the paper off the plate.

Cebuano master printmaker Manuel Rodriguez, Sr. popularized printmaking in the country, earning him the title “Father of Prinmaking”. His work includes monoprints, mostly hand-colored or reworked etchings and other kinds of prints.

Another Cebuano artist, Tito Cuevas, also exhibited monoprints in abstract expressionist style. He is the only artist known to own an etching press here in Cebu, yet he prefers to make single copies of his work.

Last Sunday, I attended a solo exhibition of monoprints by Jeffrey “Ingko” Sisican, an artist from Bohol who is now based in Cebu. Simply entitled, “Mono”, the works are still on display at the Sacred Heart Parish Garage.

Yes, it’s literally a parking space inside the church compound that opens its doors to artists as an alternative art studio/gallery. It is the idea of the current parish priest, Fr. Jason Dy, a Jesuit who is himself a practicing artist. The newly installed stations of the cross, sculptures made of junk metal and other found objects, around the church are the works of this artist-priest who insists on not signing his work with his name. But that is really another story.

In “Mono”, Sisican introduced his own “make-do” versions of off-press printing. He uses scrap plywood covered with plastic from a CD cover or a clear acetate (the kind we use to cover notebooks) as alternative to the more expensive plexiglass plate.

He would then paint (acrylic) over this plate and transfer the image on paper, applying hand pressure on the block over the paper. He thus reverses the usual process of monoprinting, which is to rub the paper on the inked plate with a spoon or some smooth object.

The results show interesting combinations of texture that cannot be replicated in other mediums, even of traditional monoprinting. The artist maximizes these effects to create abstract works that vaguely allude to natural terrain or urban decadence.

But true to its title, the best works in this exhibition are the monochromatic ones, such as his black and white works, and those with strokes and fields of gold, that, in their play with strong contrasts in line and texture, is reminiscent of a calligraphic style that almost turn them into a kind of visual koan.

Most of the works are mounted only on board wrapped in plastic and clipped in a line of nylon. This makeshift character in curatorship is consistent to the unique garage aesthetic, which in music, has always been known to originate many great bands and musicians.

It thus remains to be seen whether this garage experiment, an alternative culture oddly sponsored by a church, will turn local legends out of this young artists who sought refuge here from the dog-eats-dog materialism of the art market.

It’s a good respite from the monotony of egotism and exploitation that many artists are likely to fall prey. But one thing is sure in this exhibit, mono doesn’t mean boring.

‘Cave of the Gods’ exhibit opens

Cebu Daily News First Posted 07:53:00 04/21/2010 Filed Under: Exhibition

Cebuano artist Ritchie Landis Doner Quijano opened his solo art exhibit “Cave of the Gods” last April 7 at the Sacred Heart Parish Garage Art Studio.

The ongoing exhibit is organized by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc.-Cultural Heritage Program and the Sacred Heart Parish.

“Cave of the Gods” features eight paintings and 76 sculptures, which manifests the artist’s love and passion for his art.

Quijano said that the exhibit shows himself as “a modern-day caveman trying to re-learn, regain, re-live, revisit, re-figure, and revision an old culture and old religion.”

His art expresses “the primordial need to seek and understand his role in humanity as God’s creature.” As a result, he makes an exposition into the realm of the gods.

Quijano, fascinated with history, culture, and religion, anchors his artworks on these fields of knowledge and interest. His sculptures reveal broken and defaced statuaries saved from being lost forever and then re-presented.

Quijano, a conscious member of the church, also understands that the contemporary church, like contemporary art, is presently undergoing evolution. Hence, he staged his “Cave of the Gods” art exhibit as a proposition of how evolution and change can take place.

“Cave of the Gods” is truly an attempt and a bold move by Quijano to bridge the gap between the past and the present and between what is normal and unusual in art.

The exhibit will end on May 29.
