The rituals we observe to remember our beloved departed are among the most beautiful aspects of our religious and cultural lives as a people.
This year, Sacred Heart Parish added a new dimension to our yearly observances with an interactive art project named "In Loving Memory: Bottled Memories of Our Beloved Dead."
After the evening Mass on Saturday, November 7, 2009, Fr. Jason Dy, S.J., officiated at its inauguration rites by blessing recycled bottles which contain pictures and other symbols that remind family members of their beloved deceased. He was assisted by the Sacred Heart parish priest Fr. Benjamin Sim, SJ. The congregation was invited and a sizeable number came to inquire about the project and to plan their own participation in it.
The memory bottles were placed in niches set up on the walls of the space adjacent to the rectory leading to the St. Francis Xavier Chapel and Baptistry. The bottles commemorating the Jesuits who have served the Parish occupy a special place on the white wall.
Cebu artists Jose Marie Picornell and Ritchie Quijano, MUSE Magazine CEO and publisher Ramoncito O. Cruz, and MUSE Senior Writer and Ateneo History Professor, Fr. Jose S. Arcilla, S.J graced the opening.
Bottled Memory Testimonials shall be held on November 13, 20 and 27. The closing ceremonies will be on November 30 after which the bottled memories shall be returned to the owners. The participants are encouraged to display their bottles in suitable places of honor in their homes and offices.
This novel experience is touching in its simplicity and many of those who came expressed their appreciation for the concept, an indication that it would soon become part of our annual rituals.

Congratulations, Fr Jason. It's amazing to watch your growth as an artist. Was this your concept? It's truly a poignant way to remember those who had gone before us :)

thanks may. this is a personal concept born out of a collective desire to creatively venerate our ancestors as a Chinese-Filipino community. this too is my humble attempt to integrate art into my pastoral ministry. an interactive art project is born primarily because of these two stimuli. thanks again for your support.
